Academic Biography

I received my PhD in Medieval and Modern History from the University of Heidelberg, conducted postdoctoral research at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon–Sorbonne, and was appointed Docent in Political History at the University of Helsinki. I have held research positions and fellowships at Harvard University, Princeton University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study, Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan), the Academy of Finland, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (Uppsala), the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, and the Humboldt University of Berlin.

My research has been funded by institutions and organizations, such as the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, New York University, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Political Thought and Conceptual Change, the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Dutch Research Council, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

I served as Full Professor and Greek Chair (under the auspices of the Government of the Hellenic Republic) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India). I have previously taught at Stanford University, McGill University, The University of Chicago, the École Pratique des Hautes Études, the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and the University of Navarra (Spain). I was also a Lady Davis Visiting Professor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Visiting Professor at Radboud University Nijmegen, and a Descartes Senior Fellow at Utrecht University.

I have lectured on global/cross-cultural leadership and comparative political theory at Beijing University and Nankai University (China), the National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia), the University of São Paulo (Brazil), Koç University (Türkiye), and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Kazakhstan). Since 2014, I have been teaching the Global Leadership & Sustainability course at Sungkyunkwan University (Seoul, South Korea). I also teach public diplomacy and cognitive warfare at the Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy (THISAM) in Greece – part of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative.

Moreover, I have provided research, analysis, and advisory services to NATO, OSCE, government agencies, and NGOs on cultural heritage preservation, crisis management, and hybrid/cognitive warfare.
